From [kma Online ](https://www.kma-online.de/aktuelles/it-digital-health/detail/fresenius-steigt-bei-avelios-ein-55630 ?ref=marginsofcare.com)(translated, emphasis mine):

> Within just a few months, Avelios Medical has achieved its second major upset in the German HIS market. **Following its partnership with SAP, the young Munich-based HIS provider has now also entered into a strategic partnership with Fresenius.** Fresenius, with its German hospital subsidiary Helios (more than 80 hospitals) and its Spanish subsidiary Quirónsalud (57 hospitals), operates the largest hospital network in Europe. The DAX-listed medical technology and healthcare group is now investing a multi-million euro sum in the up-and-coming HIS company.

The article continues:

> According to kma, Helios currently relies primarily on two HIS solutions. Its Spanish subsidiary, Quirónsalud, uses "Casiopea." In Germany, the country's largest hospital chain largely uses IS-H. However, **since official support for the SAP system ends in 2030, Fresenius needs alternatives, at least for its German hospitals.** In this context, the group's investment in Avelios is "a strong signal," says manager Albrecht.

Avelios is a university spin-off that launched in 2020 and only 6 years later is already making considerable progress in arguably one of the most difficult markets for new entrants - hospital information systems (HIS). This is no coincidence: Both SAP and Fresenius are [strategic investors](https://www.htgf.de/en/portfolio/htgffamily/avelios-medical/?ref=marginsofcare.com), which now also step in as major international partners/customers. Changing the HIS of a hospital is a major decision that bears very high switching costs but as a private company Fresenius can afford to plan with a longer horizon and invest more flexibly. That may have made it easier for Avelios but it surely didn’t make it easy - the road to spin-off is long and filled with challenges, [especially in Germany](https://www.jmwiarda.de/blog/2026/07/07/wenn-exzellenz-steckenbleibt?ref=marginsofcare.com), getting this far this quickly is worthy of respect.

That being said, timing is important in its own right and the fact that SAP is retiring their HIS system is a huge opportunity which Avelios was perfectly positioned to take advantage of. Now SAP has secured itself a place in the AI race and Avelios has gained access to a considerable network of potential customers. Is the game over for other HIS providers? How is [AI](https://marginsofcare.com/agentic-ai-in-medicine/) changing the value chain? How will the [business model change](https://marginsofcare.com/alan-care-and-prevention-subscriptions/) and are we going to see fresh blood entering and dominating the system? I’m excited to observe and analyse all of this here.
